The evolution of rules: from tools of excellence to cages for innovators
Rules have undergone a profound transformation over time, evolving from pillars of collective wisdom to instruments of control and standardization.
This change has had particularly significant consequences for a category of people who create value in the interest of the entire society: entrepreneurs.
- In the past, rules were the result of experience and knowledge, stemming from a democratic discussion among experts and were designed to ensure excellence.
- Those who followed them had a competitive advantage but when they became dysfunctional it was normal for them to be questioned.
- Society valued critical thinking and individuals' discernment in the application of current norms.
Today, rules are often defined and imposed by those without distinctive competencies, becoming tools of management and control rather than growth.
They are accepted uncritically by most people and used as mechanisms of protection by those with a limited vision.
Conformity is rewarded regardless of the outcomes while innovation is stifled by unreasonable constraints.
For the modern entrepreneur, navigating this regulatory labyrinth requires a new strategic wisdom:
- When you encounter a rule, analyze its origin and real purpose, and always ask yourself: “Does this norm promote or limit the development of my potential?”
- Gradually build financial and relational resources to operate in contexts with more balanced and rational regulations.
- Operate within the rules but constantly seek spaces of operational freedom without attracting unnecessary attention.
- Surround yourself with opportunity-oriented people, who see creative solutions where others see insurmountable obstacles
- Avoid prematurely exposing your innovations in environments that might seek to normalize or regulate them
A successful entrepreneur is not one who ignores the rules, but one who knows how to conform while seeking new creative spaces to realize their vision.
In a world characterized by increasing regulation, true entrepreneurial freedom belongs to those who can read the system and navigate it strategically.
